History
Also Known As: Waterside Terrier, Bingley Terrier and King of Terriers
Area of Origin: England
Date of Origin: 1800s
The Airedale Terrier hails from England and was originally bred to hunt a wide range of game from rodents to fox. In the 1800s, the terrier was crossed with an Otterhound in order to give the dog better hunting skills around water. This resulted in the terrier being known as the "Waterside" Terrier. Crosses were then made with the Irish and Bull Terriers around 1878 in order to take away genetic traits of the Otterhound, resulting in the Airedale Terrier that society has come to know today.
In today's society, Airedale Terriers are now used as show dogs, big game hunters, police dogs and family pets.
